Hi, my name is Shawnda and I’m an addict.
A phone addict.
I’m not being stupid or funny. I realize addiction is a serious disease. Phone addiction can be too (look it up).
And look, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m addicted to my phone. I can try and justify it all and say that it’s the nature of my job and that I NEED my phone at all times to stay informed.
In reality…it’s a BIG fat-butt lie.
Recently, I’ve found myself literally unable to put it down. Like, I’m serious. There was this war going on inside my head.
I’m checking email, stalking facebook friends and checking in on Amanda Byne’s crazy tweets, taking crazy mad duckface selfies.
While doing this…I’m missing out on LIFE. And it tears me apart.
I’m missing out on real conversations, people watching and building on existing relationships.
Let’s be honest, when you look down at your phone and see what you’re actually looking at…is it really more important than what’s in front of you? Put down your DAMN PHONE! See, now I’m yelling. I’m not yelling at you…I’m yelling at myself. Maybe you, a little. But mostly me.
Let’s make a promise to ourselves. Yea?
The No Phone Zone
How about we all try a “NO PHONE ZONE” for certain parts of the day?
For me, it’s when I’m with my family. I leave my phone at home during family night out and while watching movies. When we’re at the dinner table, phone is off and away from the table.
Trust me. It’s challenging. I might try to sound like I’ve got it all figured out, but I don’t. Sometimes, I break the rule. Most of the time though, I remind myself not to miss out on life because of your (our) addiction.
